The Trump administration has submitted their 2020 Fiscal Year Budget proposal to Congress which contains drastic, across the board spending cuts to social safety net and domestic programs to pay for the corporate tax cuts passed in late 2016. The $4.7 trillion budget proposal also grows the national deficit by another $1.1 trillion next year alone, with the administration projecting an increase in the national debt to over $31 trillion by 2029 from where it already stands at over $22 trillion.
Trump’s budget proposal includes:
- Cutting $845 billion in Medicare spending and $25 billion in Social Security spending over the next 10 years
- $220 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) over 10 years, while also adding mandatory work requirements
- Cutting Medicaid spending over $241 billion over 10 years and implementing a nationwide work requirement in order to receive benefits
- An over 10% cut in Department of Education funding, and the elimination of the subsidized student loan program
- An overall 31% cut in finding for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
- An overall [13% cut to the National Science Foundation] (https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/2019/03/11/trump-budget-seeks-cuts-science-funding/?utm_term=.605f8654c9c8)
- An overall 12% cut at the National Institutes of Health
- An overall 23% cut in State Department funding
- An overall 15% cut in spending by the USDA
- An increase of 7.4% in overall spending for the Department of Homeland Security
- An increase in military spending by 5% to $750 billion, up from $716 billion
- $8.6 billion for Trump’s southern border wall, which even former Chief of Staff John Kelly calls a “waste of money”
An administration’s budget is a reflection of the party’s priorities and goals for the nation. It is clear from the Trump budget proposal that the Republicans main concern is cutting social and domestic programs in order to pay for massive for tax breaks given to millionaires and corporations, all while increasing the national deficit for future generations. Constituents must make it clear to Congress that Trump's budget strays far from true American values and must not be taken seriously.
