Save the Fair Housing Initiatives Program

The Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) is a United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) program created in 1987 to support people facing housing discrimination, educate about the nation’s fair housing laws, and cure the harmful effects of housing discrimination. FHIP is the only federal funding source for private organizations and nonprofits focused on fighting housing discrimination.

In February, President Trump terminated 78 grants to local fair housing organizations, and his FY26 budget has proposed eliminating the FHIP program entirely. Private nonprofit organizations are essential advocates against unfair housing practices, processing 75 percent of fair housing complaints in 2024.

FHIP funding is a critical component of civil rights enforcement. Fair housing is the law. It protects everyone and ensures access to safe and affordable homes. Congress must demand the preservation of the FHIP and protect housing rights for all.
