Overturn Trump’s Attack on the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program
Early in his second administration, Trump issued an executive order directing the Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, to redefine the concept of “public service” to align with his political agenda. The order included sweeping changes to eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, a nonpartisan student debt relief program for those working in public service and the nonprofit sector. Trump and McMahon’s changes to the PSLF program, which are scheduled to take effect July 1, 2026, allow the Secretary of Education to exclude borrowers from PSLF eligibility if they work for any organizations or institutions whose values are considered contradictory to the Trump administration’s far-right dogma. Many of the “illegal” programs this order targets are nonprofits that support immigrants, LGBTQ+ youth, racial and social equity, reproductive health care, and survivors of gender-based violence.
PSLF program changes will significantly limit who can have their student loans forgiven, regardless of whether they were previously eligible for PSLF. Trump’s plan will not only hurt current borrowers but also affect the future of public service, dissuading future public servants from pursuing careers in education, health care, and more due to higher education’s costs. Legislators in both houses of Congress have introduced Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolutions to reverse the PSLF changes slated to begin July 1, 2026.
Over 2 million student-loan borrowers’ careers and financial stability are at risk. Tell your representatives to support the CRA to repeal Trump’s weaponization of the PSLF and support our public servants.
